“Holy and immortal God, from the earliest of times you named us and called us into Discipleship: Teach us to follow the One whose light scatters the darkness of our world, that we may walk as children of the light.” Amen

CORNERSTONE: “Keeping the Tradition in a Brand New Way”

Jesus said: ‘Have you not read this scripture: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes?’ “

Mark 12: 10-11

The CORNERSTONE Project was born in 2000 out of a desire to create a multimedia service utilizing the gifts of many volunteers and their ministries to reach a generation described as: “unchurched or previously church seeking a deeper encounter with God.”

Coinciding remarkably with the renovation of the original worship space at St. George’s Episcopal Church (being used as a parish hall) this project offered an opportunity to reach both outward to the community and inward spiritually in creative ways.

A team of clergy, worship leaders, musicians, artists, and those interested in architecture gathered together for a project involving a “parallel model” of worship – complimentary to but not replacing – the more traditional liturgical offerings of the parish.

Liturgical Montage

Several images Illustrate the “integration of digital and physical environments” – ie: projection, altar reflection, and “illustrative sermon display (on Narnia)” – all representing the weeks theme in the liturgical color of the day – green.

This “experiment” in evangelism formed a vibrant community for almost ten years, empowering those with a passion to share the Gospel message of love, inclusion, and service. Elements of the service – particularly musical and theatrical – were incorporated on occasion into the three other worship opportunities offered each week.

The last CORNERSTONE service brought an end to the project in 2009 after major staff changes in the congregation.

The illuminated cross was covered by the lowering of a projection screen while displaying an identical picture of the cross to an almost magical effect.

“God of unchangeable power, when you fashioned the world the morning stars sang together and the host of heaven shouted for joy; open our eyes to the wonders of creation and teach us to use all things for good, to the honor of your glorious name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Amen
