Our Celtic roots as Anglicans are one of the most intriguing and mystical parts of our spirituality.

I had the pleasure to participate in a pilgrimage to Ireland in 2004 led by Rev. Marcus Losack which was based primarily in the ancient monastic village of Glendalough.

Four years later a personal pilgrimage took me to Iona, Mull, and Glenngorn in Scotland.

God willing, in 2023 I will go on another personal pilgrimage to the holy Island of Lindesfarne.

Glendalough

Glendalough Irish: Gleann Dá Loch, meaning ‘valley of two lakes’) is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, renowned for an Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. From 1825 to 1957, the head of the Glendalough Valley was the site of a galena lead mine. Glendalough is also a recreational area for picnics, for walking along networks of maintained trails of varying difficulty, and also for rock-climbing.

Iona

“That knowledge of God shall not perish from this earth”.

St. Columba – 597 AD

Iona Scottish Gaelic: is a small island in the Inner Hebrides, off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of Scotland. It is mainly known for Iona Abbey, though there are other buildings on the island. Iona Abbey was a centre of Gaelic monasticism for three centuries and is today known for its relative tranquility and natural environment.  It is a tourist destination and a place for spiritual retreats. Its modern Scottish Gaelic name means “Iona of (Saint) Columba”.

Lindisfarne

Lindisfarne, also called Holy Island, is a tidal island off the northeast coast of England, which constitutes the civil parish of Holy Island in Northumberland. Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic Christianity under SaintsAidan of Lindisfarne, Cuthbert, Eadfrith of Lindisfarne and Eadberht of Lindisfarne. After the Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England, a priory was re-established. A small castle was built on the island in 1550.”
